As the school year comes to a close and I look over the wonderful progress my students have made, I feel so proud. Each and every one of them has come a long way since September. Some of them had never held a pencil or crayon before!
Remember that as a reading teacher, I work with students who need that daily extra practice and reinforcement. So in the comments of my report cards I always ask the parents to "please engage in daily reading and writing activities throughout the summer."

To help provide parents with some quick and easy early literacy activities, I created this calendar to help the children engage in continued practice each weekday during the months of July and August. I hope that by practicing these skills the children will maintain some of the growth they have made. I know that summers can get busy, so if parents need to skip a day, I feel as if the activities are quick enough to be combined.
Also, last year I also wrote a short article about summer reading loss. I provided some fun and practical tips to weave reading and writing into the summer days.

What do you do to help prevent that summer slide?

These are so nice and I am sure the parents are happy to have something to guide them to help their child. We send home a "Summer Homework" sheet which lists ideas and all the high frequency words on it.

I try to send home a Summer Skills Review Packet with my kids to periodically work on over the summer. That's my worst fear, especially with those students who "just make it", so I hope that it helps prevent the backslide.
